Photojournalim assignment (As part of your work with John)

Task  Submit a portfolio of sourced photographic and graphic images that have been chosen and manipulated as potential image/s for the following: 

• a possible front cover for a student zine,
• a page of photojournalism in the same publication, 
•  the remaining four pages of the zine.

 The portfolio should contain a 250-300 written commentary explaining the reasons behind the decisions reach at all the stages in the selection and editing process of the images, with specific reference to how these changes affected the meaning of the image.

Copies of the original image must accompany the final version of the image once it has be cropped, or scaled, or alter in any way.

In carrying out this task you should aim to demonstrate at least one of the following:

Pass) to source photographic and graphical images and manipulate them with some assistance, or,

Merit) to source photographic and graphical images and manipulate them to a good technical standard with only occasional assistance, or,

Distinction) to source photographic and graphical images and manipulate them to a technical standard that reflects near professional standards working independently to

near professional expectations. Grade criteria P2; M2; D2

Evidence

Portfolio of at least 5 diffrent manipulated images and the original image containing selected and manipulated photographic and graphic images

Learners will describe correctly and substantially a number of differing single camera. It will also lack any explanation of how such techniques as master shot, reverse shot, image size and editing are used to tell the story.

M

Learners will explain the use of cinematic techniques and how they create meaning for the audience. For example a merit level learner might explain how the point of view shot is used to encourage audiences to identify with characters or situations, or produce a degree of realism for the audience.

Whilst, in terms of techniques, shot size, camera angle and camera movement will be considered along with editing techniques such as continuity editing, cross cutting, use of montage and split screen, with elucidated examples to illustrate each technique

Getting exposure right
Apart from focus, the thing that can really make a difference when capturing an 
image is the use of exposure.  Exposure is the amount of light that reaches the digital
camera’s sensor.  Exposure is controlled on a camera by different factors:

· Shutter speed - How fast the shutter opens and closes to let light into the camera.
· Aperture - How big the opening of the lens is to let light in.
 

Shutter speed is usually expressed fraction of a second:
• 1/250th of a second is fast
• 1/30th of a second is slow
Aperture is usually expressed in f-numbers:
• f/2.1 is large
• f/22 is small
